FAQs

What is Sunday Sauce?

Sunday Sauce Hockey is an organized alternative to public pick up hockey/stick time skates and organized adult hockey leagues. We work with the hockey community in Connecticut to organize pick up hockey games, as well as off-ice networking and charity events. Whether you are an avid hockey fan who can’t get enough ice time or someone that just wants to play every once and a while you are welcome to join us!

How do I sign up?

Send us an email to NewHavenHockeyClub@gmail.com to be added to our mailing list. From there we send out weekly attendance emails in advance of each of our skates and take the first 20 skaters and 2 goaltenders to sign up.

Who can play?

Sunday Sauce Hockey is open to men and women 18 years of age and older. We accept all skill levels as long as you can safely skate and do not pose a risk to yourself or other participants. All participants must sign a waiver prior to taking the ice for their first skate with us. There are currently no referees at Sunday Sauce but we hold ourselves to a high standard of sportsmanship to ensure a fun and safe environment for everyone. There is no checking aloud and we have a zero-tolerance policy for aggressive play.

Do I need full equipment to play?

Yes, we require full hockey equipment to participate. Some of the rinks we skate in also require a full face cage or half-shield to participate.

Can my children play with me?

Sunday Sauce is only available to adults over 18 years of age.

Is this a “beer league”?

No, alcohol and substance use of any kind is prohibited prior to and during our skates.

Can I wear my own jersey?

No, as an organized pick up hockey skate we require matching jerseys to divide up our teams. You can purchase a Sunday Sauce jersey by becoming a member or rent one from us for the duration of your skate. All rented jerseys must be returned at the completion of your skate or you will be responsible for the cost to replace the jersey.

I am new to hockey, can I come play?

We do accept all skill levels. However, if we do not feel you can safely participate, or pose a risk to yourself or other skaters, we will ask that you refine your skills at an adult skills session or public stick time first.

What are the rules?

We utilize a running clock for the duration of our skate. This is a no-contact pick up skate and penalties, off-sides, and other infractions are called by the players during the course of the skate. There are no face-offs and the puck is considered in play as long as it physically stays within the confines of the rink, regardless of if it hits the protective netting surrounding the boards. There is no aggressive play or retaliatory actions aloud of any kind. We reserve the right to ask you to leave any skate and will not provide a refund. We also reserve the right to remove you from our email list at any time and deny future participation.

Is this a public skate?

No, this is a private event. We do not accept walk-ins and reserve the right to refuse to admit prospective participants.
